Proper use of antidepressants
Depression is one of the most prevalent mental health problems among the population. According to data from the Deputy Directorate General of Health Information of the Ministry of Health (SGIS, 2021), the annual prevalence of the disease in Spain stands at around 4.1%%, and it increases with age. Added to this is the fact that our country is third in the EU for antidepressant consumption.
However, we know that depression is one of the pathologies with the lowest degree of adherence to treatments, with only 28% of patients adhering to it adequately. Therefore, our care work as pharmacists plays an important role in the multidisciplinary team, intervening in patient detection, counseling, and follow-up, as well as in referral to the physician.
The next April 18 we will address the «Proper Use of Antidepressants» in a new session of UpdateMED Hand in hand with Dr. Vanessa Moreno Galván, Doctor of Pharmacy.
Goals
- To know the etiology and the clinical and epidemiological aspects of depression.
- Update knowledge on antidepressant medications, their different subgroups, and their indications.
- Learn about the therapeutic management of depression according to the guidelines and manuals used by primary care physicians.
- To practically learn how to develop pharmaceutical care work to help patients undergoing treatment.
Afterwards, we invite you to have a coffee. Next, the speaker will present the results of her doctoral thesis on Antidepressant consumption in the province of Las Palmas.

SARNA WHAT'S HAPPENING?
Scabies is a highly contagious skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, also known as the scabies mite or burrowing mite.
In recent years, news about the increase in scabies cases in our country has been frequent. According to data from the Ministry of Health, they have multiplied by seven in a decade (2011-2021). Furthermore, a growing trend in hospitalizations and relapses due to scabies has been observed, indicating that special attention must be paid to treatments and hygiene measures, actions in which pharmacists can contribute as front-line agents.
By our Dermopharmacy Department's initiative, this activity has been organized where we can update our knowledge on scabies, led by Dr. Martín Castillo de Vera, to know how to detect and refer new cases, to know how to prevent the appearance of outbreaks, and to provide appropriate health advice to patients.
Goals
- To know the etiology and epidemiology of scabies.
- To know the basic clinical aspects of scabies.
- Learn about the therapeutic management of scabies according to the consensus guidelines for its treatment.
- Explain the possible reasons for poor treatment response.
- To know non-pharmacological and health promotion measures in relation to scabies.
Content
The session will begin with a brief historical and epidemiological review of the disease. The clinical presentation of scabies will then be reviewed, with special emphasis on the different location and appearance of the lesions in adults and the pediatric population.
Regarding treatment, there will be a review of the main consensus guidelines and analysis of possible reasons for the poor response currently being observed.
Finally, non-pharmacological measures and advice will be presented that can be carried out from the community pharmacy to facilitate correct treatment adherence and prevent relapses.
