II Canary Islands Animal Toxinology Conference. Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment.

Health Risks in the Canary Islands

The significant increase in accidents nationwide caused by bites or stings from venomous native and exotic fauna species has turned these types of events into a public health problem.

In recent years, the appearance of potentially dangerous exotic animals in the Canary Islands has increased. These animals were either transported unintentionally or seized by public administration security forces as a result of illegal trafficking.

If we add to this native species capable of producing poisonings, the probability of having to deal with such incidents increases, making specific training of healthcare personnel necessary for toxicological emergencies caused by wildlife.

Objective

Establishment of action protocols and training for emergency and urgent healthcare personnel for the administration of first aid, diagnosis, and treatment of patients injured by native or exotic terrestrial venomous fauna in the Canary Islands.
