How does the electronic prescription system work between autonomous communities?
Canary Islands was a pioneer in the National Health System (SNS) within the Electronic Prescription Interoperability project. It consists of Prescription treatments issued electronically in your autonomous community of origin can be dispensed at any pharmacy in the national territory..
This project requires communication between the autonomous community of origin, the Ministry of Health, and the pharmacy of the community where you wish to obtain your treatment. Your pharmacist will inform you of the procedure.
What documentation do I need?
You will need to present your health insurance card and, if applicable, your national identity card.

These services will be available as long as both autonomous communities involved (origin and destination) offer them.

How does the electronic prescription system work between European countries?
The Spanish project for electronic prescription interoperability with the EU is coordinated by the Ministry of Health and The Canary Islands was one of the pioneering autonomous communities.
Electronic prescription and dispensing, through the My Health@EU service, allows a medication prescribed by a healthcare professional via electronic prescription in the Canary Islands can be dispensed at any pharmacy in another European Union country¹, as long as the destination country is interoperable (View List of interoperable European countries).
When a Canarian citizen travels to another European country and needs to pick up medication at a pharmacy there, the pharmacy will show them a Information document written in Spanish to inform you about the how your personal data will be processed in the destination country, where you will pick up your medication.
What documentation do I need?
You will need to present the Individual health card of the Canary Islands Health Service.
The card does not have a photograph, so you will need to present an official identification document with a photograph (national ID card or passport) in order to be correctly identified.
The European Health Insurance Card is not valid for collecting medication.
Do I have to pay?
You will have to pay 100% of the price the product has in the country where you are picking it up. Request the ticket and the invoice of the dispensation granted, and once in Spain, present them to your autonomous community of origin to request the refund of the amount corresponding to it.
What products can I pick up?
All prescription products can be dispensed, except for those marked as non-dispensable. Currently, the following are excluded for all countries:
- Narcotic drugs
- Effects and accessories
- Individualized vaccines
- Compounded formulas
- Dietary therapeutic products
In the case of Spain, the following medications also cannot be dispensed:
- Psychotropic medication
- Medicines with more than 4 active ingredients
If you have any of these products prescribed, you can view them at the pharmacy, but they cannot be dispensed to you.
Canaries patients will be able to request an advance of treatment from their primary care physician of the Canarian Health Service for travel, exclusively for a period of one month and only once a year, for any trip they make to another country.

Paper recipe
If you go to another European country with a Paper recipe, although there is no specific model, the minimum data necessary that must be recorded are:

- Patient data: last name, first name, and date of birth.
- Prescription issue date.
- Prescribing doctor's details: full last name and first name, professional qualification, direct contact details, professional address (including country), and signature (written or digital).
- Prescribed drug information: generic name (instead of the brand name, which may differ in another country), dosage form, quantity, dose, and dosage regimen.
The term of validity will be 10 days from the prescription date.
You will have to pay 100% of the price the product has in the destination country. Request the ticket and the invoice from the dispensation granted, and once in Spain, present them to request the refund of the amount corresponding to it.
No will they be able to be dispensed narcotic drugs, since they require a special prescription.
