«Pharmacies were the social networks of the past century in the Canary Islands for years,” explains J.J. Laforet at the presentation of the centenary events.

December 9, 2025

The apothecaries were the social networks of their time for more than half of the 20th century. This was explained by Juan José Laforet, official chronicler of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Gran Canaria, author of the book “Pharmacy and Society,” which was presented today by him and the president of the Official College of Pharmacists of Las Palmas, Loreto Gómez. The event is part of the activities being celebrated for the COFLP's centenary.

Laforet gave a brief review of “this research work that has taken us almost two years,” highlighting the role of the pharmacist during the first centuries after the conquest of the archipelago and, especially, during the last century. “The pharmacies,” he pointed out, “have been witnesses to comments, gossip, information that was not reported by the media or arrived late, and, of course, important political conspiracies and decisions for our society.”.

He recalled the presence of pharmacists “in the streets, with the Callejón de la Botica, or in the social role played by figures such as Carlos Bosh Millares or Martín Freire, as well as the public activity carried out in the different headquarters of the College.”.

Main event

Loreto Gómez referred to the different actions framed within the centenary events, which officially began “with the change of the isotype that accompanies the College's logo.” She also recalled the participation of a hundred registered members in the Rainbow Family organized by Pequeño Valiente, and the upcoming presentations of the new website and the APP for registered members.

”We must make special mention of the official ceremony on December 29th, where a tribute will be held for all the people who have been an active part of this College," he said.

He also cited the collaboration with ONCE as a relevant fact. This collaboration will allow us to have the COFLP's image on all lottery tickets for the December 29th draw, thus commemorating this date nationwide.
