The pharmaceutical profession celebrates today their big day, coinciding with the anniversary of the founding of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). Internationally, it is done under the slogan Think about health, think about pharmacy, and in Spain, we've accompanied it with the #ConCienciaFarmacéutica legend to improve the world, highlighting the dual scientific and social dimension of pharmacy.
Las Palmas has 1,393 registered pharmacists who are distributed among community pharmacies, hospital pharmacies, distribution, research, teaching, clinical analysis, and public health. We will celebrate this with the illumination of different institutional buildings which have wished to join this celebration: the Presidency of the Government, the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, and the Agüimes City Council, in addition to the headquarters of the COFLP.
Loreto Gómez, president of the College, wanted to emphasize on this day the importance of pharmaceutical professionals in all their modalities, highlighting their «involvement as fundamental agents in healthcare. Our daily and constant proximity to the population makes us a healthcare reference and obliges us to be especially responsible in care, attention, and training, in addition to working to re-educate patients, who are subjected to false information and malicious hoaxes that can put their lives and those of dependent individuals at risk.».
For his part, Jesús Aguilar, president of the General Council of Official Colleges of Pharmacists of Spain, stated: “On World Pharmacist Day, the pride of practicing a profession characterized by a spirit of dedication and vocation in service to patients emerges more than ever. Our sole purpose is to work towards prevention, health education, the safe and responsible use of medicines, and access to treatments, with the closeness and professionalism that define us.”.
The pharmaceutical profession in Spain
According to data presented by the General Council of Pharmaceutical Colleges in Spain, there are 81,081 registered pharmacists who carry out their assistance work in multiple areas, all of which are related to health.
Because, as the slogan says, if you think about health, you have to think about the pharmaceutical profession: about pharmacists practicing in community pharmacies, hospital pharmacies, clinical analysis, public health, industry and pharmaceutical distribution, optics and acoustics, nutrition, dermopharmacy, orthopedics, or teaching; each and every one of them responds to the needs of patients.
Organizations worldwide, including the General Council, Colleges of Pharmacists, and individual pharmacists, join this celebration each year with the aim of highlighting the work of the pharmacy profession and sharing it with patients, administrations, and other health professionals, among others.
The General Council has produced a commemorative video that highlights the role of pharmaceutical professionals in all areas of practice: pharmacy, hospital, distribution, industry, research, teaching, clinical analysis, public health, orthopedics, optics and acoustics, and dermopharmacy.
Additionally, a commemorative poster has been created, available along with communication materials at www.pharmaceuticals.com, and are invited to share them on social media with the hashtags #DMF2025 and #WPD2025.
